Brain Restoration Therapy
Powering Up The Brain
Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is the term that describes the powerful impacts that light therapy (especially infra-red therapy) has on cells and healing. Laser therapy (the most powerful means of delivering PBM) is now used by essentially every NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, PGA, US Olympic team and college sports program in the US because of its unparalleled ability to decrease pain, inflammation, swelling and reduces time to recover from injury by increasing cellular regeneration and tissue healing.
Research indicates it will cut the healing time from surgery and injury in half, enabling athletes to recover faster and return to competition. Trans-cranial Photobiomodulation Therapy (tPBM-beaming infrared light through the skull and into the brain) is a major breakthrough in the treatment and improvement of brain function across a wide spectrum of disorders such as Depression, Anxiety, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), Memory Loss, Brain Fog, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Stroke Disorders. Researchers are even finding improvements in sexual dysfunction, nightmares and suicidality.
Neuroscientists, Doctors and Psychiatrists from Harvard, the University of Texas, the University of Sydney Australia, Massachusetts General Hospital, and many others are excited by this novel, safe and medication free treatments that are consistently showing through a growing body of animal and human studies that by using lasers the brain with infrared light we can help patients recover from a variety of mood and degenerative brain diseases and likely prevent these diseases from developing in the first place. We even have evidence that we can take healthy high functioning brains and still improve cognition (clarity of mind, problem solving, speed). For those with genetic links to neurodegenerative diseases and mood disorders tPBM can be an excellent treatment to treat and prevent these disorders before they manifest.
If you are suffering or at genetic risk for these diseases you should consider tPBM sooner rather than later. Once a brain starts failing and the longer it struggles, the more difficult it is to restore. A penny of prevention is worth pounds of cure…especially when it comes to the most essential organ in your body! I’m sure anyone who has a family member suffering with Alzheimers, Parkinson’s or severe depression would agree. It is difficult to bring together all the research in this field into one place but we will try to update the information as studies are released and published. Brain research, anatomy, pathology are also complex, so we will do out best to simplify it to make it easier to understand how these treatments can help.
What Does Lasering the Brain Do?
As of now, we know tPBM improves brain health and function in many ways such as:
- Neurogenesis– stimulating new nerves to form in the brain. This is helpful to counteract the loss of brain matter that occurs to everyone as they age, which contributes to age related Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
- Synaptogenesis– Synapses are the connections between neurons. tPBM results in new synapses’ being formed in the brain which increases the brain’s communication. This is the opposite of what happens with brain aging and neuro-degeneration.
- Increased ATP Production– ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate) is the chemical energy that cells produce in the mitochondria that perform every action in the body. Low ATP will inhibit any and every cellular function in the body and lead to dysfunction and disease. Photobiomodulation vastly multiplies the amount of ATP in cells, enabling cells to produce proteins, create new cells and do everything the cell does. PBM increases ATP (by hundreds and thousands of times according to research) in sick/damaged/dis-functioning cells while having no effect on healthy cells. PBM increases ATP by vastly increasing the cytochrome C oxidase molecule that controls cellular respiration. Professor Gonzalez-Lima, a neuroscientist at the Univ. Of Texas has discovered after studying thousands of fresh post-modem brains of Alzheimers patients that it is a lack of cytochrome C molecules that leads to the disease (not the widely published and Beta tau entanglements). Low energetic states of brain are also linked to anxiety and depression and were improved by Dr. Paolo Cassano, a Psychiatrist at Mass. General Hospital.
- Increase Neuro-Protective Proteins– Neuro-protective mechanisms are considered by some researchers to be the “holy grail” of helping our brains remain healthy as we age or contract neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or stroke because it helps the patient maintain healthy brain cells and resist the effects of brain matter loss and disease. tPBM is proven to increase progenitor cells (potent neuro-protective cells) which helps explain why so many conditions improve with this unique therapy.
- Increasing Blood Flow-PBM therapy increases blood flow by increasing Nitric Oxide (NO). When laser photons hit red blood cells they release NO which is a gas in the blood stream that causes vasodilation (increase size and blood flow through the artery) which will substantially increase oxygen to the tissues both in the treatment area and throughout the body. Oxygenation is critical to keep all tissues alive. Low oxygenation due to age and lack of blood flow is the second most common cause of dementia as well as other nerve diseases such as neuropathy.
- Decreasing Inflammation– High levels of inflammation is been linked many diseases and brain disorders such as depression, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Stroke and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Reducing inflammation is critical for all chronic health problems.
- Increase White Blood cells– White blood cells are critical for cleaning up tissue damage and restoring proper function. tPBM does this throughout the body and this effect is observed in the brain as well.
- Anti-Apoptosis-Apoptosis refers to a genetically programmed death of cells in the body. Lasering the brain helps the cells continue to survive and is critical for healthy functioning immune cell populations.
- Anti-Oxidant Effects-Oxidation destroys healthy cells. Laser therapy activates anti-oxidant properties to protect cells from damage and death.
Decrease Edema– Laser therapy is proven to decrease edema/swelling in the body and brain. Swelling is the body’s response to tissue damage and part of the inflammatory process. Removing swelling is critical for decreasing pressure on the nerves after traumatic brain injury, stroke or chronic inflammation related to depression, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc. Laser therapy decreases swelling and edema by dilating lymphatic channels that drain the fluid from the damaged area.
Angiogenesis– Laser therapy leads to the creation of new blood vessels and lymphatic channels. The ability to stimulate new vessels as critical as blood and lymph channels, is a powerful healing benefit as many diseases in the brain and body result from damage to the lymphatic system (lymphedema) and insufficient blood flow.
Stem Cells– When infrared light is projected into flat bones such as the skull, tibia, etc. stem cells are released into the blood stream. Stem cells seek out damaged tissues in the body and have the ability to differentiate and morph into specialized cells, reinvigorate and regenerate tissues, and restore healthy function.
There's no other technology available that can restore brain function in as many ways as tPBM. Thanks to tPBM, we can now safely treat both common and complex brain related conditions without medications or side affects and help people's brains last them their entire lives.
What Does the Research Show?
The following are clinically relevant studies to help pateints feel confident in tPBM for their particular condition. This list is by no means exhaustive as studies in this field are being published regularly and it is challenging to keep up with and catalog them all. There is however a solid foundation of research that we are confident in the safety and therapeutic benefits of tPBM. Research articles will be linked along with the studies and selected quotes. Some studies will be listed multiple times as there can be some crossver (ex.patients have both Anxiety and depression or traumatic brain injury and PTSD). Lines without quotations were added by me to help readers understand relevancy. Catagories ries include:
- Depression/Anxiety/PTSD
- Traumatic Brain Injury/Cognition
- Stroke
- Memory, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s
